Interview with Bas Hendriks: Biofit Natural Fitness Training PRO Course

Reviewing the Biofit natural fitness online course… and Bas’s thoughts on eco-friendly fitness studios with biophilic design

Bas Hendriks has completed our natural fitness training course online so we caught up with him for a quick Q&A to hear his vision of natural fitness and sustainable gyms:

Bas, you are a certified Biofit training method PRO, can you tell us a little about yourself?

- I live in the Royal capital and the largest Dutch city on the North Sea in the Netherlands, The Hague. Currently I’m in a marketing position at an IT company and I am working on other projects as a freelancer.

What is your fitness or sports background?

- My background... I was almost able to ski rather than walk. And when I could run I first started playing football and sailing in the summer. Later I became a field hockey goalkeeper, here I built up my ability to react quickly. When the team sport commitment no longer ran well with my work, I started running. To be clear; running a lot!

Where did your interest in natural fitness come from?

- I want to make the best version of myself in a sustainable way. I’m in my late 20’s and want to be able of withstanding anything life throws at me. That’s why the natural fitness method fits me perfect.

What natural fitness movement was the most fun or challenging for you in the online course?

- The most challenging natural fitness movement was the Inverted Roll. I just couldn’t figure out how to do the movement, after some personal guidance from my grandma I finally managed ;)

- The most fun natural fitness movement was the Cat, the first exercise in the movement module. Falling back into the deep squat position and total confusion due to contralateral pattern (hand and foot connection) but once I got comfortable, I really enjoyed the movement in different variations!

How would you describe the Biofit natural fitness philosophy?

- I don't know if it is allowed, but I would prefer to use your own phrase here from the Biofit e-course Matt:

“We sweat, train hard and explore our limits. There are no shapes to be made, no fixed sequences. Life is short, let’s get to the point. You want to look good, move well and live pain-free. We get it.”

If you could open your own natural fitness studio one day, what would it be like and how would it be different to the other gyms in your city?

- The studio would be a sustainable - natural fitness studio (almost-hopefully plastic free). The studio has eco-friendly fitness equipment & is equipped with the added health benefits of Biophilic design.

Within the studio we work with the Natural Fitness Training method, through which we will achieve sustainable mental and physical performance.

The studio is equipped for the beginner and experienced athletes to make the best out of everyone who enters the studio!

How do you think Covid will affect the gym business in the medium-term? Perhaps everything will return to how it was before, or not?

- I think I can speak on behalf of the whole world that it is a complicated and unforeseen period. About the profession we work in..  hopefully it will offer great opportunities and that it is once again made clear how important fitness and health are to society. You don’t know in advance what life will throw at you, so get ready!
