Nature Gym Design: Functional Fitness with Botanical Wallpaper - Biofit Hotel Concept by Gym Designers + Fitness Consultants

Eco-friendly functional fitness luxury hotel gym

What makes an eco hotel gym with biophilic design?

Designing a hotel gym has its own distinct parameters, most notably that there is a unique commercial aspect to the space when compared to a standalone gym business.

The former is not there to generate revenue directly, it is more of an indirect source of value within the hotel guest experience.

Most hotels will aim to include a fitness room, no matter how small, if only to tick the box with a treadmill, weight rack and mirrored walls.

We’ve all been there - faced with a quick, pre-meeting workout on a business trip we are left with few options other than tackling the tiny 20m2 space the hotel has on offer, possibly in a basement with no natural light.

Brave are those hotels that allocate a more desirable space to their gym, perhaps allowing for views out onto nature or the surrounding skyline. Anything but the basement option, please!

When aiming to add an eco-friendly design to a hotel gym, which is the Biofit preferred approach, we therefore have to look to other ‘levers’ in order to dial-up the nature credentials, most obviously via the choice of gym equipment wall decor. Well-designed gym interiors, incorporating elements like spatial design, color schemes, and biophilic design, can significantly enhance the overall experience, creating an energizing environment that supports both physical and mental wellness.

Functional fitness gym interiors and equipment

When charged with equipping a hotel gym, we begin by understanding the target market in question, in other words, what type of clientele is the hotel expecting?

The reality is of course, that a hotel gym, if a nature gym or a functional fitness gym, is always going to have to offer what we call ‘the basics’.

A hotel gym simply isn’t complete without a treadmill, a spin bike and perhaps a recline bike or elliptical for the less active or injured.

Breaking out of that paradigm completely is a challenge, so we prefer to work within the limitations of the cardio selection and then play with the strength zone, converting it into a functional fitness area. This approach allows us to create an adaptable and multifunctional workout space that can accommodate various exercise types, from yoga to strength training, catering to diverse employee preferences and fostering a communal environment.

This equates to a set of dumbbells and kettlebells, as well as pull-up bars, TRX suspension trainers, sandbags and some ropes.

Arguably there is nothing that can’t be done with this set-up, except perhaps some heavy leg strength training, in which case the addition of a squat rack with barbell and plates solves the problem.

Eco-friendly cardio equipment options for hotel gyms

Given that a Biofit designed hotel gym will always have a cardio zone, we look to work with specialist suppliers such as SportsArt eco-friendly machines that pump a modicum of electricity back into the grid, or Woodway Curve treadmills that are a superlative option for interval training as well as longer indoor runs. Using eco-friendly cardio equipment in indoor gyms not only promotes sustainability but also offers the comfort and accessibility of exercising indoors.

Nohrd and WaterRower may be our go-to brand for home gym equipment but their grinder (inspired by a movement from sailing) and rowing machine are both worthy additions to our gym equipment procurement list.

Botanical wallpaper and natural light in an eco hotel gym

Finally then, in this concept we have added a final nature gym flourish with a botanical wallpaper that adds both a element of biophilia, bringing the outside world in, as well as a note of elegance that is often missing from a gym interior. These design elements contribute to creating a luxury gym atmosphere, enhancing the overall workout experience with high-quality materials and exclusive aesthetics.

We’d pair this with a mirror wall opposite to double the biophilic design effect and to make the modestly sized hotel gym appear just a little bigger than it really is.

Biophilic Design in Gyms

Integrating Nature into Gym Spaces

Biophilic design is a crucial aspect of modern gym design, aiming to reconnect gym-goers with nature. By incorporating natural elements, such as plants, water features, and natural light, gyms can create a more welcoming and calming environment. Imagine walking into a gym adorned with living walls or green roofs, where natural stone or wood accents add a touch of the outdoors. Water features, like fountains or aquariums, can provide a soothing backdrop to your workout routine. Large windows or skylights flood the space with natural light, making the indoor environment feel more expansive and invigorating. Incorporating natural materials, such as bamboo or reclaimed wood, into the design further enhances this connection to nature, creating a harmonious and organic gym experience.

Benefits of Biophilic Design for Fitness Enthusiasts

Biophilic design offers numerous benefits for fitness enthusiasts, making it a valuable addition to any gym. Exposure to natural elements has been shown to improve mental well-being, reducing stress and anxiety while promoting a sense of calm. Natural light and fresh air can boost mood by increasing serotonin levels, helping to alleviate symptoms of depression. This connection to nature can also inspire and motivate gym-goers, encouraging them to reach their fitness goals. Additionally, natural light and fresh air can enhance physical performance, reducing fatigue and increasing energy levels. By integrating biophilic design, gyms can create an environment that supports both the mental and physical well-being of their members.

Creating a Productive and Healthy Gym Environment

Design Elements for Enhanced Well-being

A well-designed gym environment can significantly impact the well-being of gym members. Here are some essential design elements to consider:

  • Lighting Design: A combination of natural and artificial light can create a welcoming and energizing atmosphere. Using LED lights with a high color temperature can mimic natural light, enhancing the indoor environment.

  • Color Scheme: A calming color palette, such as blues and greens, can promote relaxation and reduce stress. Warm colors, like oranges and yellows, can increase energy and motivation, making them ideal for high-intensity workouts.

  • Flooring: Rubber flooring is a popular choice for gyms due to its durability, ease of cleaning, and excellent shock absorption. It provides a safe and comfortable surface for various fitness activities.

  • Ventilation: Proper ventilation is crucial for maintaining a healthy indoor environment. Air purification systems and adequate airflow can ensure that gym members breathe clean, fresh air during their workouts.

  • Organic Gym Equipment: Incorporating organic materials, such as wood or bamboo, into gym equipment can create a more natural and welcoming environment. This not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also aligns with eco-friendly and sustainable design principles.

By incorporating these design elements, gyms can create a productive and healthy environment that supports the well-being of their members, making their fitness journey more enjoyable and effective.
